I love reading stories to children. After working in an elementary school, I became familiar with the books they ask to hear again and again. My granddaughter is touring the US performing characters from Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, so I sent the book to my two-year-old grandson. He asks his mom to read it over and overβ€”and thinks he would let the pigeon drive! I hope children will feel the same way about A Safe Way Home, whether someone reads it to them or they read it themselves. Perhaps Rover's journeys, and the solution his master finds, will get them talking.

Our home can be lively with our two cats chasing each other. Daisy, a tiger-gray cat with a white chest and paws, and Velvet, whose fur and whiskers are all black, eventually settle down for naps on the sun porch or curl up on our laps for a pet. At bedtime, Daisy sometimes gets to the bed before we do and sleeps in the same spot at the end. We also have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Most Sundays, you'll find us at our country church. It is white, with a steeple and stained-glass windows. God's word is preached there, and we cherish the friends we've made and support the church however we can.

We live a simple country life, with a view of the river from our back windows. Deer and wild turkeys wander through the backyard, and bald eagles sometimes perch in a tree beyond our detached garage. We feel blessed to live in such a quiet, peaceful place.

☘ What Readers Are Saying β™‘ β™‘

A timeless tale based on real-world accounts of an extraordinary Border collie named Rover, reminiscent of classics like Lassie or Old Yeller.

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

β€œOh how he wanted to be safe at home with Mr. Doherty.” Every child's story relies on an emotional anchor. This line occurs when a bloodied, exhausted Rover escapes territorial attacks to reach his sanctuary.

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

Rover is a deeply relatable protagonist and a story about devotion, setting up the community intervention that ultimately saves Rover from further harm.
